Patient Testimonial

Carey, late 50s

Carey was a science teacher in Manchester. She had a major accident at work in 1999 when a heavy oak blackboard fell off the wall and pinned her to a teaching bench. She fractured her spine in three places, suffered a prolapsed disc and sustained considerable nerve damage which meant she was bed-bound for three years. She had numerous operations and physio, but the medication for her back caused renal artery stenosis which caused high blood pressure. In 2006, this resulted in a stroke which went to her optic nerve and left Carey blind. Lack of mobility meant she put on weight, and she developed painful OA of the knee. Carey had an arthroscopy which helped for a couple of years but then the pain returned.

Pain:

The pain was excruciating. Emotionally I became very depressed and frustrated because there were things I wanted to do but couldn’t. I couldn’t even get down the stairs in the end so I was literally trapped in my own home. Within a year I went from a pain level of 0-10. It progressed quite quickly. Any movement you make uses your knees and the pain was just so debilitating. I really struggled even to great downstairs and I got to the point where I would rather have chopped my leg off than go on.

Treatment:

I walked out of the hospital myself and was out of pain within two days. The results have been amazing. My knee is back to normal. It was nothing short of a miracle. They take blood from your arm, centrifuge it and then put it back into your knee. Within two days I noticed that the pain had gone and in about two and-a-half weeks I noticed I was walking down the stairs normally. Almost without thinking, I was able to bend my knees, walk the dog, go on the exercise bike and play with my grandson. Because I am now active, I have lost a lot of weight and I feel so much better in myself. It has literally given me my life back. If my knee started hurting again tomorrow I would not hesitate to go back and have another injection. The great thing is you don’t need any preparation like you would for an operation, and because there is no post surgery recuperation period afterwards there is no impact on your family and friends who would otherwise have to look after you. You can also come off also powerful painkillers which really do have quite nasty side effects, particularly if they interact with other medication. Having nSTRIDE® was the best decision I have ever made and to anyone considering having the treatment I would say – “Just go for it, it is so easy, so quick, go for it.”
